How to Play Blu-ray and DVD with Plex Media Server via Plex Home Theater

This article provide a best way to stream movies off Blu-ray / DVD disc to Plex Media Server for playing via Plex Home Theater.

Plex Media Server is one of the most famous home media sharing/managing solutions which helps you connect your Plex clients with all of your local and online media. If you have lots of movies on DVD/Blu-ray discs, you may want to get them into Plex for streaming with ease.

Hi, I have been using Plex for about a year and I love it.

My question is, what is the best format for ripping video content from DVD’s or Blu-ray‘;s. I have a large DVD and Blu-ray collection and I have been using Handbrake to save them as .mkv files. I have about 200 saved so far and I just don’t think .mkv is the best format for me. I am not a big quality freak, I mean I don’t care if everything is blu-ray quality or 1080p. I just want decent quality but a smaller size, maybe less than 2GB per movie. MKV ranges anywhere from 4GB to 7GB which is a bit extreme.

Handbrake actually converts the video and/or audio codecs into more efficient codecs, which is why it produces much smaller files and also why it takes longer. (it’ll still produce .mkv’s, just much smaller ones due to the more modern codec’s used within them)

There is a a nice ripping program called Brorsoft Blu-ray Ripper that works very well and is also fast.

I like it better then Handbrake because it had move options and was as good in quality. It can rip a 2 hour movie to H.264 with fairly high settings in about 35 minutes with GPU and CPU acceleration.

The nice thing about Brorsoft is it can remove the black bar better then handbrake and it can join multiple files into one output file.

It supports many more A/V formats than Handbrake. You can choose mp4 or rmvb format or other portable format according to the Plex Supported Format.

Guide: Ripping/Converting DVD/Blu-ray for Plex Media Server

1. Import source Blu-ray/DVD movie

After downloading and installing this Blu-ray/DVD copy software, click “Load files” icon to import source files.

Note: Before loading Blu-ray content, a BD drive is needed and pls keep networked.

2. Choose output format.

In the dropdown list of Format menu, you can find the format you like. Just below Format is Output, here you can browse your computer for a better destination folder for Blu-ray Ripper to output your converted movies.

Basically the “Common Video -> H.264 Video (*.mp4)” is just all right.

If you like, you can click “Settings” to change the video encoder, resolution, frame rate, etc. as you wish to get a smaller size video.

3. Edit video files(Optional)

From the Edit menu you can choose six distinct editing workspaces; Trim, Crop, Text Watermark, Image/Video Watermark, Effect, and Audio Replace.

Trim: Allowing users to decide where to start and where to end when converting the selected clip, so that unwanted segments will be cut out after conversion.
Crop: Getting rid of the black edges and unwanted area of the image.
Text Watermark: Here, you can create a text watermark to personalize your video. For a text watermark, select the “Enable” box below the preview screen and type whatever text you want in the text watermark area.. You may strikeout, underline and transparent effect for the text. The font, color, size, and style of the text can be adjusted too. Click “Apply to All” to apply the settings to all the videos that are listed in file list.
Image/ Video Watermark: Here, you can import an image or video watermark to personalize your video.
Effect: Customize the output effect. Here, you can adjust brightness, contrast and saturation, apply gray, flip color, invert or Aged film effects and apply a number of deinterlacing options.
Audio Editor: Adding audio to target video file so that you can replace the original audio track with favorite melody.

4. Start converting

Press “Convert” button to rip DVD/Blu-ray movies. The conversion speed also depends on your computer configuration. My suggestion is not to play or edit videos when it’s converting. After conversion, click “Open” or “Open output folder” to quick locate converted files.

Now that you’ve liberated your DVD/Blu-ray movies! You can transfer the converted DVD/Blu-rays to Plex Media Server for playing via Plex Home Theater.

If you want backup Blu-ray with original structures, you can click the quick button “Copy the entire disc”(on the top of the interface).

If you want copy movie only from Blu-ray discs, from “Format” bar, you can choose “Copy” > “Directly Copy” from the Format menu and then specify a folder to save the M2TS files from Blu-ray disc.
